Ho Chi Minh trip 2012 // Touring Mekong river

Destination one : Temple stopover
Not the most flattering combination of a blue dress and red slippers but seriously , I'm at Vietnam and that is fashionable enough for them . So anyway , we took on a day tour with Bryan's folks to some far away rural area and the first destination was a stopover at the temple . Their garden of flowers were beautiful and flowers remind me of my late grandfather so I grew to appreciate looking at flowers since .

Destination two :  Dragon , Unicorn , Turtle & Phoenix Islands
Took a river cruise to some islands . Beautiful island names but they look the same anyway with no special meaning attached to the name at all . Such a disappointment ! Through the cruise ride , the sun was literally cooking us alive . So I came back to Singapore a few shades darker , no thanks to the one day tour .

Destination three : Island hopping / Mekong Sampan ride
No itinerary info was given so from the start till the end of the tour , I didn't even know what to expect . Island hopped to some fruit tasting session and I tried vú sữa ( milk fruit ) ! This fruit is only available in Vietnam / Cambodia so I took the chance to try it .  It is only when you travel that you realize , every country regardless of their standard of living does have their way of survival and their local yummy treats . Then it was time for a sampan ride along the mangroves at Mekong river . How does a sampan look like it'll keep you safe seriously ? Being so near to the muddy water and with the other sampans constantly colliding into yours , was quite a fearful experience .

Destination four : Lunch in a village
Took the horse cart ride into a village's restaurant for a feast of local food . Bryan and I roamed around the vicinity to see an unstable wooden bridge and took the risk to take pictures with the help of another kind tourist !

With this entry marks the end of my Vietnam trip . Though I found it really torturing the first few days having to adapt to the serious culture shock and living habits , I grew to love travelling even more . Travelling is never only about enjoying the luxury and the best of what another country has to offer . I found a new meaning of travelling after this trip that living how the locals live can also be a rewarding experience . Of course , nothing beats a nice island like Bali / Ko Samui chilling in the beautiful resorts or dining by the beach , but that is all easily achievable . For now , I can proudly say I experienced so much of Vietnamese culture in just 5 short days , and although chances are that I'll never be back again ... at least I've been there before !

love,
Sheryl
